225. in a pastoral sense, the churchs ministry is called upon to be particularly attentive to young people. they are the churchs future, and the church cannot fail to notice that many of todayís youth do not know that the faith which is the source of hope for a better world still exists, that it still exercises a powerful attraction in the hearts of many people, and that it is not a doctrine in any way obscure or mysterious. rather, it is a simple and clear message of hope. the church is called to be a school of prayer and a model of holiness, a liturgical college and a community of disciples. she is called to be the dove, the bridge, the home of all who are disoriented in a world where their will is easily broken. she is called to guide people towards maturity, towards the fullness of their humanity, to help them face their own ageing and death, and to offer them the promise of eternal life. this involves two aspects: the first, to teach young people about their past and present, and the second, to tell them about the future, in order that they should live with hope and without fear in the light of god s future plan for them. the church should not hesitate to make her witness felt through everyday life. we should not forget that the more we love god, the less we should love our neighbour. our young people need to know that in christ, the love which only god can give is revealed in every person, in every nation, and in every human being. all that god has made is good and good for us; love for our neighbour is infused into the father, son and holy spirit. it is his love, which inspires our love and makes it generous, sharing, extending and giving. our young people must be taught to love god and neighbor with this love, and the church is called to lead them on the way of love. she is, therefore, also responsible to young people with their questions and their doubts, as well as to those who have already chosen another path and need to discover the true meaning of love and solidarity which she proclaims and represents.
the new evangelization is seeking a paul-like figure who is capable of inspiring the world with the reality of conversion to jesus christ. he will be a person who shares the world’s pain and who feels the call to sacrifice for justice, peace, freedom, and for the brotherhood of all people. he will be a preacher and a preacher of messages accessible and comprehensible to everyone, and the most practical possible. he will be a theologian who deepens the meaning of each word. he will be a master of all spiritual means, and who knows his own limits and seeks to serve only the lord; a spiritual master, in the most intimate sense of the term. he will be a man who is open to dialogue and who does not hesitate to respond to those who ask questions. he will not defend the church as a dogma or a doctrine but will carry out the task of transforming her through communion and collaboration.
the second volume will look at the way the new evangelization challenges the man of god: what is a man of god today? and how can we prepare ourselves to be men of god? how do we need to prepare ourselves? and what can we learn from the people of god who are already men and women of god?
19. to this end, therefore, the catechumenate is not intended as a mere preparation for or a place of waiting for the baptism of christian initiation, but rather as an introduction to the life of faith which can never be completed in the churchs sacramental life. this experience of faith is a long process in which the catechumen makes his or her way forward by a gradual process of the intellect, the will and the affections; it has its own problems, its own insights and its own joys. the word of the church can never be spoken too often, never too deeply or with the total conviction which is the goal of this journey. the catechumenate therefore, is not an optional category which the church has adopted for a certain season of her life and which is then abandoned. it is destined from the very outset to be a reality in the church in all of her various situations and circumstances. the entire lives of the holy women of the catholic church, from the beginning of christianity down to the present day, have been lived with great fervour and faith as members of the catechumenate.
